In 1995, an effort to initiate a cooperative and combined Criminal Investigation Unit was developed with the creation of the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation. This unit is made up of state, county, and local law enforcement agencies within the county who work out of one office. They have significantly increased the case-closure rate for the agencies. The theory proved that the efforts of criminal investigators will be enhanced if they work together within one office where ideas can be shared. In 1997, the Narcotics Task Force for Worcester County was invited to join the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation with the idea that most crime occurring within the county is drug-related. Both narcotic and criminal investigators will be working under one roof to further pronounce the efforts at reducing crime. The Worcester County Commissioners have graciously donated space in the building currently housing the Criminal Investigative Unit for this purpose. This cooperative spirit can only lead to better relationships between law enforcement agencies and serves to diminish the long-endured (but seldom acknowledged) turf battles between law enforcement organizations.
